Home-based workers elect their Punjab body

Labour Education Foundation organized a one-day training workshop on Occupational Health & Safety for home-based women workers on May 17, 2024. It was attended by around 26 workers belonging to Lahore and Sheikhupura.

The workshop began with a group work in which the participants identified their occupational health and safety related issues. These included backache, headache, muscular stiffness, damage to eyesight and intoxication with certain chemicals. Resource person Dr Huma gave them tips on how to improve the situation and also prescribed them some fitness exercises with practical demonstration. She also prescribed them some medicines for immediate relief.

Then resource person Jalvat Ali discussed the Home-based Workers Act implemented in Punjab from February 2023. Then the participants elected their Punjab level office-bearers through a democratic voting process. Ashra Naveed, Margaret Mukhtar, Sabran Shahid, Maryam Mudassar and Shazia Tariq were elected as president, vice-president, general secretary, deputy general secretary and information secretary respectively through the voting. Nasreen Siddiq was elected as joint secretary, Komal Shehzadi as office secretary and Ameena Bibi as treasurer, while Nabeela, Nazia, Saima and Kirn Shehzadi were elected as members of the executive committee.
