Adult Literacy Centres making HBWs literate
7
December 2022
Students are studying at two Adult Literacy Centres (ALCs) established by Labour Education Foundation in Lahore for enabling Home-Based Workers to read and write as well as do simple mathematics for counting their wages instead of relying on others, particularly thakedars (agents who offer piecemeal work).
Being literate the Home-Based Workers can also read general information, especially know reports about the market of their respective products. Thus, they are in a better position to negotiate with the thakedars vis-à-vis their wages. This skill also enables them to become a good trade union leader.
Both centres have 25 students each. The ALCs offer two class times – from 9am to 12pm and from 2pm to 5pm – and students may join any of it as per their convenience. However, teachers are available at ALCs from 9am to 5pm.
